Regional Focus

Greater Philadelphia is home to a multitude of life science assets ranging from world-class medical education and research institutions to top pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, healthcare insurers, top-quality providers and active patient advocacy organizations. Eighty percent of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies have a presence in the region.

Four National Cancer Institute Cancer Centers and three nationally-recognized cancer clinical trials organizations are located in Greater Philadelphia. The region boasts at least four world-class research universities and equally as many renowned teaching hospitals. Altogether, life sciences in the Greater Philadelphia region represents approximately 300,000 jobs or 10% of the region's three-million strong workforce

The Greater Philadelphia Bioinformatics Alliance seeks to capitalize on this broad distribution of world-class research, development, teaching, and industry organizations by marshalling these resources in cooperative and collaborative ways—all designed to create a Region of Excellence in bioinformatics and integrative biology.

Through our regional focus, we seek to create a nexus of activity to utilize our cutting-edge research programs, attract and retain leading scientists and entrepreneurs, and ensure that both new ventures and expanding companies are drawn to the region. The ultimate effect will be to advance life sciences and improve healthcare for all. In the process, we will develop our regional workforce, ensuring retention of bright minds and skilled workers, able to hold high-quality jobs and providing a secure tax base for the region.
